4.2 Liter Engine Serial Number in a Series III XJ6

The number stamped on the left rear of the block is 8L226640S GP165.

Does anyone know if this number is an earlier Series III or is it likely to be from the 1987 model year of the car?

Is there an easy way to tell the difference?

I am trying to determine if this is the original engine.

Unfortunately, I don't have the data to accurately date your engine, all I can find out is that it was made well after September of 1984. More than likely is the original engine......

Jaguar-Daimler Heritage trust may be able to help with supplying a Heritage Certificate which would confirm that for you.

Steve;

Thanks anyway. What you were able to tell me is more than I had to start. I did see a reference to Series III engines having 1 7/8" diameter intake valves in "The XJ6 Jaguar from Bumper to Bumper" by Jim Isabell available for free fromJagLovers.org.
