Boy if THAT doesn't get some comment...

Anyway, been self-employed off and on (mostly on) for 35 years in the State of Washington.

We had a vote last year on annexation to the city (we always were county), and every annexation vote for the last 30-40 years has been a two-part vot:
Do you want to be annexed, and do you want to accept the financial indebtedness of the city?
Always yes/no.
This time, they lumped the two into one measure, but financial matters require 60% to pass. They got 59%.
So, the city council said, hey, no problem, we'll annex you anyway.

I got the "welcome business owner" packet a couple of weeks ago, read it and the city website and ordinance.
Home business, if you have more than 500 square feet dedicated to your business, you must bring your entire house up to Commercial Fire Codes, including sprinklers in every room, AND ADA wheelchair access, even if you have no customers (I do mail-order), PLUS $200 minimum a year for their license fees, and they get the right (it seems) to come "inspect" your property whenever they want.

So, wrote a letter, had it notarized, put it in an envelope with my state license and resale certificate, and mailed it Certified to the State yesterday afternoon.

As of 2359 hours last night, I am retired (City took over at 0001 hours 01JUN11).

I know I will get all sorts of letters, fines, etc., for not having a license in the city, but my hindquarters are covered, as I am not and have not done business in the city.

Interesting feeling, being out of business.
That, and Friday I hit 62.

Wow, congratulations on your retirement. That's a huge milestone, hope I can do it myself someday.

Now, get out and drive your LBC! :driving:

I did, all over town today, in the pouring rain.......

Congrats on the retirement......but sorry about the circumstances.

I'm 39 years in (and 60).

62 is sounding like a good number to me, but it depends on the some things that are way outside my control.

Fortunately, lots to do now, so we'll see.
Tried to start the grille changeout in my 1950 F-1 Ford yesterday (has been mangled since long before I got it 25 years or so ago).
Royghly 45 bolts, none of which have been out for over 60 years, and so this morning I hobbled down to the chiropractor.

Sorry about the circumstances, but congrats on the retirement. Hope you are able to enjoy it.

Enjoy every day of your retirement, love those F-1's. I on the other hand must die with the hammer in my hand, so do me a favor and enjoy a few of those days for me. Too bad about the city. Cities just want money. I try to stay away from them. Continued success, Elrey

We moved here, into unincorporated county, 37 years ago this year on purpose, to avoid the cities.
Drives ne nutz.

Look at it this way. Retirement means you can either be a gadfly or you can become a blatant politician in the city and if lucky get even with the powers that be. I personally would prefer being a gadfly!

Wow. Congrats, and also I feel your pain. We've been self-employed for two and a half years, and the amount of time, effort and cost required to keep our little ship in compliance with city and federal law is oft-times overwhelming.

Best of luck!

Proud of you Dad! I woulda done the same thing but maybe put some "bonus" material in the package from the neighbor's stable.

Pm me their address and I'll send 'em a heepin' helpin' of fresh squeezed sentiment plopped in the box straight from the source.

Nothin's too good for my Dad's business associates!

Now all I need is a box that'll play the theme from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" when it's opened.
:cowboy:
