3000 oil presssure / gauge

hey all-

Driving the 3000 last weekend ('60 BT7) I noticed that the oil pressure was down to zero (by the gauge) while idiling but jumped to 20psi at higher rpms.

The engine seems fine so I'm inclined to think its the gauge. Any suggestions as to how to check the gauge / get an accutrate oil pressure reading on the engine ? Is this normal for these gauges ? The oil level is fine and the engine is running very well.

Thanks
Chris

You need to hook up a manual gauge and see exactly what pressure you have. 0 at idle and 20 pounds at revs doesn't sound good so you better be sure it is good. I would check the pickup screen as well. oil pan gaskets are cheap.

I'm smiling even though we are getting snow

I had the same thing at one time. It turned out there was an air bubble in the line to the gauge. I disconnected the line to the gauge and ran the engine for a moment until oil came out of the tube and then tightened the nut. Bingo easy and cheap. I hope that is your problem.

Did you disconnect it at the gauge? Mine acts similarly. I have assumed it was a sticky gauge.

What ever you do, I would stop driving the car until you find the reason. Have you checked under the valve cover? If oil is spraying all over, things may be loose on the top end.

Yes, by all means first check under the valve cover. I disconected the line at the back of the gauge (you can catch oil in a ragwhen it pumps through) but also check the other end of the line at the engine for tightness and oil leaking. This is after you are sure that the engine is proforming well.

OK so I thought that it was normal to have the rocker oilers squirt oil. Duh.... I do have a bit of spray if I remove the oil filler cap.

What would be "loose"?

thanks all
yeah I 'm not driving it till I get this figured out, gonna start with an external gauge today.

I'll let you all know what I find out

thanks again
Chris
