I bought a couple of Sprites. A red '59 and a light blue '61. The '61 was in neglected original condition and the '59 had been "restored".
The '61 performed much better than the '59 but was in need of much cosmetic work. At that time I was more interested in a "proper" restoration than having a driver, so the '61 was torn down to the roller stage and the '59 was driven. It was soon found that the floor of the '61 needed replacement rather than patching and was removed. In the days before the internet I wasn't looking forward to hand forming a new floor skin since I couldn't find a new part. The interior parts from the '61 were stored in my '57 bug while the clean up and floor search continued.
Some neighborhood kids playing with matches set fire to the shed next to the Bug which was hot enough to catch the interior of the bug on fire and burn the Sprite parts before the fire department arrived. :mad-new::sorrow::crushed: A couple of weeks later when I started the '59 to go to work I was greeted with the unmistakeable sound of a spun rod bearing and it was shut off immediately. Both Sprites have been setting at the shop untouched since.
Their time to live again has arrived.
They have always been my best liked car, followed closely by my MGB GT and the Subaru 360
. Expect a few questions after I have had some more time to read old posts.
