Hey Dennis!

Here is a new thread for your oil pressure
questions and answers. You've probably taken
everyone's advice and cleaned your gauge and
oil pipe and maybe bought a small oil psi gauge.

Here's a short video clip of my oil gauge after my car
was warmed up and run for about ten minutes. Sorry for
the bad quality but it's night here and a video guy I'm not.

Make a short video clip like this and post it. I am
fairly certain my engine is A-ok in terms of oil pressure.
BTW: When I drop off from 4000 rpm I get one brief backfire.

 
Is that cold, warm or hot? How long/far have you driven? Great oil pressure but don't the TR6's have a relief valve in the filter similar to my TR3?
 
I was going to ask the same question. My 250 has a relief which is set (I believe) at 75psi. If those readings are hot oil, isn't there a risk of blowing an oil seal?
 
60 psi at warm idle,is perfect in my opinion, however if you'd put a lot of miles on the car, I think you'll see that pressure drop off.
Relief valves prevent excess pressure, that occurs at off idle rpms. All cars have them. The faster you go the faster the pump pumps, and pressure increases.
I enjoy the speculation of the problem, but--The only way to KNOW the real oil pressure is with a test guage. You may or may not have a problem, but only an accurate test guage will reveal that. Find a good shop, and ask them to check it for you- shouldn't cost much
Worth a lot for peace of mind-- oil pressure is a potential engine killer.

I don't see what's so great about it ... too much just wastes power and increases wear on the oil pump. It's like trying to drink from a fire hydrant, doesn't work any better than a garden hose.

All car engines have an oil pressure relief valve, but apparently Dale has his disabled or cranked down to some ridiculously high pressure. Since there are very few seals that are subject to full oil pressure, generally the failure point is the oil filter itself. I've seen them split open and dump the entire crankcase worth of oil overboard in a matter of seconds. Not a Good Thing. On a TRactor motor, sometimes the drive to the pump fails (due to the stress of producing all that pressure), likewise not a Good Thing.

IIRC, the factory setting for the TR250/6 was 70 psi, just like the TRactor motor.
 
Anything above 15 psi at idle, as long as it accelerates above 30 psi above 2500 rpm is quite acceptable... Ideally want idle to be around 25-30 warm... But that is "ideally".
 
Dale can you put that oil pressure gauge back on the motor and run the test again. The aux. one you got. See, you get another use out of it.
 
I had a similar high oil pressure situation in my 76 TR6. I had ordered a new relief spring some time ago, but had never installed it. With the onset of cooler weather the pressure has gone even higher.
Today I removed the relief spring and replaced it with the new one. Oil pressure after warm-up is now 75 psi at hiway cruise and 50 psi at idle. It will run up higher if accelerating up around 5K.
In comparing the old and new springs, both had 17 coils, but the old one was 0.100" longer than the new replacement (1.60 old, vs 1.50" new).

You might want to take a look at that Dale before doing anything expensive.
