MGB 240Z Wheels on a MGB!

Hey Guys,

Here is a plug for somebody I don't even know other than the three emails we've shared. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angel.gif

Every so often I get an email or someone in our forum or on the street ask me about my wheels. As some of you know they are Western Wheels (no longer in business) and where a real popular aftermarket or dealer option for Datsun 240Zs. Mater a fact you can still see a few of the older Z’s still sporting them.

As some of ya know already, I got mine on ebay for a song some years ago and I must have done something right because a lot of folks keep asking me about them. Anyway I got an email from the guy who runs ZPARTS.com, saying that somebody referred him to my web page saying that I had some for sale. I don’t of course but the gentlemen & I exchanged a few emails and low & behold he has a couple wheels in stock just like mine. Not a full set mind you but none the less there they where. Anyway looking over his stock on line I noticed that there are quite a few different wheels that I think would look good on a B. Many are a little bit too wide for stock fender wells but would look down right HOSTILE with the right rubber tucked up under some flared finders.

Anyway if you’re looking for something a little different than the next guy and originality isn’t a top-priority or you are working on a hopped up B (V6 or a V8 conversion) - I suggest checking out www.ZPARTS.com.

Cheers!

Follow-up.

The interesting thing is that the guy I talked to from ZPARTS says that he has noticed an increase in the amount of inquiries from MGB owners for z-wheels like mine.

Normally he doesn’t bother to collect the “skinny” 14”x 6”wheels like mine because most of the Z car folks opt for the larger foot print. Anyway because of the calls he is now seriously reconsidering the smaller/skinny wheels like we might use.

Hey Bret -

Thanks for the info. I'm in the middle of bringing the B back to life, and been thinking about wheels. Current plan is to go back with the Rostyle wheels, but still may change. Good to know other sources.

You must have been on vacation - haven't seen any posts from you lately. If so, did you go anywhere exciting?

Mickey

Nice site! I've presently got Enkei 14x6 but am interested in 15" wheels - didn't see what i want on his site though

Thanks, Bob,
Saved me the trouble of having to type
"Tony,

What's up with the Buick Bullet holes in your jolly old wing? "

Mike

They're probably not "Buick" bullet holes........ever see Tony when he gets frustrated with a project? "Smith & Wesson" bullet holes are more likely. (Just kidding Tony!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ) By the way, I REALLY like the Porsche-esque headlamps on this car......great idea!

Steve,

You're not saying we should knickname him "Bullet Tooth Tony" are you? - Yeah the headlamps are rather unique - One other similarity this auto and old Buick share - It probably weighs about as much as a 57 Buick Roadmaster's front Grille - You know, the ones that look like the mouth on a Baleen Whale......

Tony, I gotta say that you definitely think outside the box when it comes to styling!

Bob M

Those are '49 Buick Portholes & they actually work! The inner fender areas are open into the area between the inner & outer fenders & hot air from the engine compartment is pulled through hoses & exits through the portholes....gotta keep the heat down in that engine compartment - 4.0 Rover V8 putting 300hp at flywheel!

Oh, & ywp, the car is planned to come in around 2,000 pounds total with me & a tank of gas!

I really like the way the headlights look on the car too. I too originally thought they might have come from a Porsche, but upon when I asked I found out that they're head light assemblies from the new Mini Coppers. Either way, they look sweet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tony,

I had no idea that car was a Ringer - I just thought it was a customized C - I'd like to see it finished - are you going to install Cobra Style Side dumps?

Tony's an Army man, they use Colt 45ACP instead of the S&W

As soon as they get open space for it in the bodyshop, it goes back for finish work & then we figure out the paint scheme - around the original Pageant Blue - wait til you see the photos of the 25 pound fiberglass hardtop - kinda like a snug but has 2 raised areas on either side of a surface about the width of the GT6 scoop on top of the MGC hood...& has the little vents in rear to allow hot air to escape at speed....very sinister looking!

What doea a regular B weigh?

How about a Spridget?

My '72 Midget weighs 1720 lbs with full fuel and the normal stuff in the boot. The side curtain cars are about 100 lbs or so lighter.
Don't know for sure about the real life weight of a "B".
Jeff

According to The MGB Experience the curb weights of the car went up pretty significantly over the years. Their testing weights went from about 2400lbs in '62 to about 2500 in '80. According to them the manufacturer curb weights were 2080lbs for '62, 2220lbs in '68, and finally 2335lbs in '80. But I guess that's a little different from 'real life' weights of cars on the road... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My goal is to finish this car under 2,000lbs....or as close to 2000 as is possible....we've removed lots of metal & used fiberglass everywhere possible

I'm surprized it only porked up 115lb from 1968 to 1980.

I'm guessing most of that weight went in to the bumpers...
