Well, at 8:30 EDT tomorrow morning, I will be in front of the TV watching the 76th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This is my favorite race of the year. Unfortunaly, Speed TV will not be airing the whole race. Each year, they have cut the coverage. When it was Speedvision, the aired the race from start to finish. This happens once a year. I would think that the NASCAR fans could donate one day so us sports car junkies could get our yearly fix!

It looks like it could be a real good race. Peugeot has set some blistering laps with their diesels and have the first three positions ahead of the Audi diesels.

Where is my bottle of NO-DOZ and the pot of coffee. :crazyeyes:

Watched the start - Peugeot 1-2-3. Who'd a thunk that DIESELS would be runnin' LeMans???

I plan to check in from time to time, but too much other stuff to do today...uh...and tomorrow....
 
Aye, but Allan McKnish changed that in a hurry just to make a point (At least for a little bit!). Looks like it is going to be the tortoise and the hare as far as the oil-burners go!! Boy, I'm thinking the development of those cars is made redundant by the way the market has gone! When they started on them at Audi, diesel was the cheapest choice of fuel... :rolleyes:
 
Still may be in Europe. Even if not, modern diesels are just flippin' great. Tons of torque, and better economy too. Whats not to like?? They sell diesel Jaguars in Europe that can be quicker than the equivalent gas cars. Seems strange to me. I had a Rabbit diesel years ago, and tho economical, the last thing it was was quick. I had a sticker in the back window that read "Too slow? Too bad!!" It really is amazing to me what the computer revolution has done to the auto industry. Things that were once impossible are now commonplace. Like Diesel race cars...

Aston Martin (13th overall) leading Corvette for LMGT1 by less than a lap, so a great race in that class too

Was dogsitting at my uncle's house, he of the widescreen telly and satellite with Speed. Naturally we had a storm and it kept cutting out. Since I was all worked up over this, I watched the movie instead. Porsche won!
 
I was up late, watching Mc Nish's run in the rain as it became dawn. Yow!!Sub 4 minute laps in the rain. I thought that the "feed" coverage was pretty decent, but not enough coverage of GT1 and GT2 cars. I have a couple of videos saved of Mike Hawthorn doing a lap in 56, and a GT40 doing one in about 69. The GT40 one takes a lot less time than the Dtype. Still, I was surprised at how few of the corners are recoginzeable in the modern version of the track. In 56 the track was positively skinny. It is amazing how fast they went for 24 hours on skinny tires, and no safety equipment.They had a few shots of David Hobbs in a "spitfire" factory car. Looked like a GT6 to me...I think that was in 64, and then they showed him in a gt40. Nice. The "feed" hadf a quick overview of the group C historic race with plenty of shots of the Silk Cut Jaguars.I fell asleep somewhere in there and missed the finish. Too bad for me. I want to see LeMans live once before I croak. I want to make the whirlwind trip, and see normandy, some of the WW1 battlefields, and finish with the race. Some year....

The LeMans Spitfires used fiberglass roofs based on the prototype GT6 bodyshell, as the fastback roofline was deemed to offer some aerodynamic advantages. They ran four cylinder engines for homologation reasons, and the David Hobbs/Rob Slotemaker car finished 21st overall, and first in class. ISTR that the Spit coupes also put up a very good show in that year's Tour de France, which I saw in a wonderful Shell film on an old Motorfilms Quarterly DVD.
