2024 HD8 Carb Rebuild

My apologies in advance if this post is redundant, I did search earlier posts and did not find discussions specific to my questions. So here goes.

I have acquired a 1965 BJ8 which sat in my neighbor's barn for 35 years (with occasional start-ups up until a few years ago). Amazingly it did start up sufficiently to drive it across the street to my garage (after freeing up the frozen brakes). I am now doing a carb rebuild and started with a basic external cleaning and disassembly of the front carb. The first thing to note is the amount of crap in the float bowl and the bowl that feeds the main jet was truly unbelievable, I am surprised the engine was able to get fuel at all. There was dirt built up right up to the jet, no exaggeration I removed 2 - 3 Tbsps of dirt. Anyway - questions:

1.) The throttle shaft seems firm with no play so I would prefer to leave that in place and not disassemble it if not necessary. But I was planning on immersing the carb body and all other associated parts into a carb cleaner solvent bucket - is this ok to do considering the teflon bushing in the throttle shaft bore? I know plastics and rubber products should not be exposed to that solvent but am unsure if the teflon bushing will be ok.

2.) While cleaning the massive dirt build up on the externals of the carb, the "shoe" (?) that the choke lever cam rides on broke apart like just another piece of dirt. Is there any way to repair/replace this little bit, or am I stuck with buying a new $125 rod assembly?

3.) What is this plug-like thing on the side of the carb body leading up to under the vacuum piston? It doesn't seem to be movable. Is this something that should be dealt with in the rebuild or just leave it as-is?

Thanks for your help.

When you get to the point of tuning the carbs, you'll lift the piston a bit to see how engine speed changes. The carb thingy (lifting pin) does that. So, yes it should move up and down. There's a light coil spring to hold it in the down position. But it should move freely.

Oh thanks. Yes I see that now on the exploded view. The pin is quite stuck currently, I better get some penetrant in there and work it loose.

if it's not leaking i would hold off on freeing it for now, as they can leak and become a nuisance. when the time comes for tuning, you can free it up then. it sounds like you've a full plate on your hands as it is.

The teflon bushing should be OK in carb cleaner. I would probably let it soak for an hour or so, then clean the crud off with a soft toothbrush; further soaking if required.
