2005 Elise at Barrett-Jackson Auction

Why does someone go to the Barrett-Jackson Auction and buy a 2005 Elise for twice the manufacturer's suggested retail price? Yea, it was a "special," but that's a pretty hefty premium for a car with no additional horsepower.
 
After watching that auction a couple of times last weekend, I found it to be a great place for folks with too much money to part with it. Clearly, at least a few of the purchases were purely emotional, with prices far beyond the fair market value of the car.

Auctions have a way of grabbing you!!!I was at a corvette auction with a novice to keep him from spending to much on a car that was over valued & we sat behind a man who was bidding on the most beautiful 63.......Way out of our league-I was fairly WILLING the guy to buy the car-it was all I could do not to shake him to continue....LOL-- my husband took my bid card.It can be compelling........Randi /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
 
The folks at Barrett-Jackson are superb marketers. Free alcohol for some registered bidders, Assistants in the crowd to drum up enthusiasm for bids, the whole nine yards.
