2 electric problems

I have recently had 2 electric problems and before I try to fix them I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas based on what's happening. My temperature gauge stopped working the other day. It was sticking a little but would respond with a light tap. Can these things be cleaned or taken apart or am I probably looking at a new one? Also, on a more serious note, my signal lights stopped working the other day and I'm wondering if its the switch or if its a relay or something. It's a '79 Spit where the horn and signals are in the same switch. The horn still works, as well as the headlight dimmer but there is absolutely no response to the signals. The lights won't come on at all. Any ideas on what I should check first, preferably the cheapest?

On the turn signal problem, check the flasher unit, (on a TR6 it's located in the passenger footwell, but it could be somewhere else on a spit) check that it's getting 12V with a multimeter when the ignition is on and the turn switch is activated. Assuming it's not getting voltage then trace back to the fusebox (you need a wiring diagram) and check that, if it's getting 12V then check that it's clicking and sending the voltage to the lights, the terminals might need cleaning or you might need a new flasher. Other areas to check are the grounds on all the turn signals.
On the temp gauge, I'm pretty sure thay come apart and can be cleaned, but I've not done so myself.

my left turn signal lamp stops working on my '76 tr7 when the rear indicator lamp is loose in the socket.
