I am very tempted to take a road trip to the VTR convention in Irving, TX in late July but have a real concern about the heat in Texas in July. Any reports out there on the conditions? This has gotta be one hot show, temperature wise that is. The drive for me is about 7 hours from home, assuming no breakdowns. Am I just being a candy butt?

Bill,

It's about a 7 hour drive for me as well, and I'm going! It's gonna be hot for sure. I plan to leave early in the morning. That way, my wife won't figure out exactly how hot it's gonna be until we're past the half-way point. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bill-

How can a guy from Franklin, Louisiana be a 'candy butt' when it comes to heat?

I lived in Dallas for about 15 years - it's hot - figure mid 90s for sure. Humidity will be lot lower though, than what you are used to. Main thing is to stay in the shade in the day, and at night it should be very reasonable.

It's called air-con-di-tion-ing.
I just mowed my lawn and I was wringing wet.
And what they say about "dry heat", that's a lie, yeah!

Two words: drink water! I went to the VTR Convention in Dallas-Ft. Worth in 1997 and, for the first time in my (Northeastern US) life, nearly passed out at one point from dehydration. As I recall, though, lots and lots of free water was available at events such as the autocross (held on a huge blacktopped parking lot).

I'd been at the VTR meet in Georgia ten years previous and recall it seeming much hotter due to the humidity. I think it's the lack of humidity in Texas that fools you until heat exhaustion and dehydration sneak up on you.

Sad to say, I won't be @ VTR this year. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I was thinking the same thing that Randy posted when I first read the opening post. Just remember Bill that unlike Louisiana, it should cool down at night and shade is actually cooler when there is less humidity.

Now as far as hot being hot. When my sister was in Iraq with temps hitting 130, my brother made the dry heat comment. Her response was... 'Your oven makes a dry heat too. Why don't you crank it up to 130 and stick your head in it and see how it feels.' She wasn't too pleased with his comments. Although he spent two years in an Armor Unit at Fort Polk. When they would go to NTC for desert training they considered the desert a vacation from the swamp.

Well, I was exiled to Dallas some years ago, so can speak of the heat with a TR6. Mine does not overheat even when it is at or above 100F. That's not to say though, that the car and I don't say ugly things to each other when traffic gets tangled.

Hey Bill... Just looked at your weather.... we're running about 10 degrees higher than you guys... In July It's gonna be HOT! Figure on 100 degree days, and 85 degree nights. Las Colinas is an upscale community north of DFW Airport, and I'm sure they're equipped for heat related issues. I don't know if I'd try and replace a release bearing in the afternoon heat, but other than that, you should be OK. A quick tip,.. cover the interior during the day...it's amazing how HOT black can get.
Take care Bob

Paul, we drove through Dallas a couple of years ago and traffic seemed more like shuffling a deck of cards at 80+ mph. North and south of the city we had many traffic stops nearly all the way to San Antonio actually. From there to Corpus it was great driving with little traffic.
I think Bill will be very happy he has his aux. lights on his roll bar.
One place south of Dallas the traffic came to a stop as far as we could see. People started pulling off the interstate and going across the medium about a hundred yards, or more, to the frontage road. "When in Rome", I followed at about 70 through the grass. We proceded down the frontage road a few miles past the blockage and jumped back on. After all this time I can't believe I did that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

Re: 1st prize,3 days in July in TX, 2nd prize,5 da

Greetings ALL Triumph Enthusiasts!

This is the early edition of "From da Prez" (of the Triumph Stag Club USA) so all you folks can begin final preparations to attend VTR 2006 in Irving Texas! This will also be the 4th Annual General Meeting for the TSC USA. BE THERE!!

You say you do not know WHEN it IS??
Dates are July 19-23 2006.

You say you don't know WHERE it IS?
Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas, Irving, Texas 75039 (just north west of Dallas)
(972) 556-0800 or
toll free (800) 843-6664. Discount Reservations end on July 4 2006 so RESERVE NOW!!

You say you don't have any information?
https://www.vtr2006.com

And no whining that it is going to be "too hot" either!! Woosies don't drive Triumphs, they drive MG's!

Besides, the 4 star Omni Mandalay Hotel and Resort definitely has more than adequate air-conditioning, ice in their drinks, ice cold beer, cool verandas and soothing swimming pools to keep you more than comfortable during the whole event. Evenings will be in the 70 - 80 degree ranges, absolutely perfect for taking those drives with the top down.
Besides, do you attend the event for the destination or for the people and cars?!?

Last year VTR 2005 was held in Rockford Illinois, the drive to was in record heat, and Rockford - well I have been to BETTER destinations. But we did not go for the venue, we went for the people and the cars. Had it not been hosted by ISOA, we would NOT have attended.

VTR 2004 was in Richmond Virginia. Many drove through record heat, and yes the venue was nice, but most went for the people and the cars. Had the Richmond Triumph Register not hosted the event, we would not have driven 4200 round trip miles in the Stag!!

VTR 2003 was in a Pennsylvania manure field cow pasture for Goodness sakes!! In the rain! WITH FLIES!! And it was hot, smelly AND HUMID!! Oh sure, you went for the venue? No, you went for the people and the cars. (yes, and some of you MG drivers probably went to roll naked in the field - we have the photos!)

The point is, the Red River Triumph Club in Texas is prepared to provide some of the very best Texas style southern hospitality EVER!
If you do not attend this 2006 VTR National Convention 19-23 July in Irving Texas, you will regret missing all the fun, not to mention the great people of the Red River Triumph Club, and the cars.
Hop out of the car into the shower and some fresh clothes, grab a cold beer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thirsty.gif and you will forget the heat in an instant. Wear your Stag Antlers and I'LL BUY YOU A BEER!!

And that Omni Hotel and River Walk!! It has got to be THE BEST venue for a VTR National Convention, EVER! It is located near the Mandalay Canal, complete with River walk, shopping, dining, and Venetian water taxis, 10 miles from Grapevine, Texas, home to Grapevine Mills Mall, Bass Pro Shop (and an excellent restaurant/brewery), as well as a quaint downtown shopping district and wineries. Covered parking and trailer parking are provided for registered vehicles.

So make your plans NOW to git on down to Texas, kick up your heels, and have some Texas Style fun!

See ya'll there! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/savewave.gif
