my v12 has developed a slight problem in that I was driving the other day and noticed a buzzing noise from gearbox also gear selection in drive was eratic. When the car was stopped smoke was everywhere from underneath, when inspected underside of car was covered in trans oil especially on right hand side cat area.On further inspection oil was also around rear trans mount(does the vent pipe exit there?)This is now all cleaned off and the car will select all gears and when you pull away this buzzing noise is still apparent if then neutral or park are engaged the noise is still, changing pitch when the motor is reved.. I also suspect that the trans was overfilled, the dipstick is a right pain to get the correct level, What is the cold marking for?because even when cold the level is well above cold max

Which engine do you have? The 5.3 has a TH400, the 6.0 has an 4L80e. The 400 has a vacuum modulator on the right side, the 4L80e is electronic.

Some ideas, some of which are off the wall.

Are you sure the noise is from the tranny? Could it be from the front fan or maybe a heat shield hitting the tranny? Could the tranny mount be bad (it is a Rube Goldberg affair)and allowing metal to metal contact.

The cold level on the dipstick seems to have no purpose. Let the tranny come to temp and then read the dipstick. If it is overfilled, you can use a tube and a pump and remove it through the dipstick hole.
