Spitfire 1978 Spitfire Distributor Amplifier Module

I bought a 78 Spit about 2 months ago, and spending time
understanding what ive got. It looks like the Previous Owner (PO) replaced the Lucas breakless pick up with a Beck Arnley Elctronic Ignition.

the Distributor Amplifier module is disconnected . leads on each end of the harness just tied up and disconnected.

It runs and starts fine no problem running. And I dont want to fix what works, but wondering when and if trouble shooting should be
needed, do I need the amplifier?
Whats the purpose of an Amplifier?

thanks for help
