1970's Capri gearbox question

This is being posted on behalf of a friend of mine... They have recently acquired what they think is a 1977 Capri V6 (it was through a scrapyard), they require a gearbox for it and aren't sure what to do.

Is there a commonly available gearbox that will bolt right in? Does anyone have one for cheap that they don't need anymore?

Thanks in advance...

Sherlock i have a 70's vintage capri v6 with gearbox, avaiable. or at least if you like i could post a pic of it . Mine is a 2.6 liter "Cologne" i am interested also if any know what else would bolt up to it.

I also know there are a few folks on here who are into the Capri's, specifically one of the many Steve's...

Right you are Sherlock, I am definately into Capris,
Okay, the 2.6L gearbox won't work, as the pilot bearing
in the crank is too big, the MustangII is another option,
but you'll need to have a pilot bearing made, or the
input shaft turned down to the proper size... Or you
could wait for me to swap the engine and tranny out of
my recently aquired '76... for a V8, ofcourse...

Actually, let me call around, I may be able to dig one
up for not a lot of coin...

I heard from another source that the Mustang II gearbox isn't the same but the bellhousing could be used for a T5 swap.

Yes the MII bell housing can be used for the T5 swap,
but the input shaft still needs to be modified to fit
the 2.8L pilot bearing...

SteveL

Steve is there anything that bolts up to the original bell housing? Is there any market for the side linkage tranny?

Here is the info I got from the grm board

The block bellhousing bolt patters are the same. The Moostang uses Ford's typical US trans bolt pattern, the Capri uses a European Type E box bolt patter, if I'm not mistaken. Bottom line is you can't bolt a Capri box to a Mustange bell, but you can bolt the Capri box to a Capri bell to a Mustang block. And the other way around too.

Those of us still with Capris are using the cable bell from Mustang IIs to adapt T-5's to 2.8, 2.9, & 4.0 Cologne motors for our Sexy European cars.

There was a reasonably priced Type E box in BC for sale ...

Yeah, a 2.8i (Injection) from Jolly Old England
will bolt up to the original bell housing, but other
than that, you're looking for a MII 2.8, or an
original tranny, Oh yeah, the 2.8i got a 5 speed
similar to the XR4Ti, in other words, weak...

SteveL

actually i was wondering what Tranny would bolt to the bell housing, ya see i have the motor and tranny. the tranny has a side linkage set up and i need a top shifted tranny....any ideas what i can use?
