1970 Ford Cortina MKII

Hey guys. Newbie here from Manitoba. I purchased a 1970 Cortina MKII (think its a MKII from pictures iv'e seen on web)Anyways, I'm considering doing a V8 swap. Any info on this is greatly appreciated. It currently has a 1300CC Kent motor with 3 spd automatic. Car is almost in to good of shape for me to really wanna butcher the car. So i figured I'd check on here, to see if anyone has done a V8 swap.

There are lots of high performance options available for the four bangers for that car, that I would go with a full HP rebuild of the Kent or find a nice Lotus twin cam or a Coventry Climax. During that era, there were lots of Ford spec engines being used in SCCA, that you could find gathering dust, do the swap and be might be eligible to compete in vintage events. Check with your local amateur racing sanctioning body to see what would qualify. Also dump the auto box at the same time. You might easily be able to drop in a 5.0 but not what I would do. My XK 120 replica was designed to use that era engine and drive train, but I would prefer the four cylinder or v6, if I can get the chassis weight down to 50% or find a Jaguar 'C or D' six rather than the eight. Lumping that car with a v8 would destroy the great handling built into it big time.

Generally good advice from Steve, but for heaven's sake steer clear of a Coventry Climax. Any worthwhile Climax you can find in good shape is worth many times what the car's worth and costa a fortune to keep in good shape.
Plenty of four-banger Fords that will fit and keep the car well-balanced, including pushrod Kent and OHC Pinto engines.

Steve, the 6-cylinder XK motor weighs more than some V8s!

I'd go with the (1600cc) Kent or Pinto engine suggestions as well. A V-8 would require some surgery and if the car is that nice it would be sad to cut it up. It's a light, nice-handling little car and you don't want to lose that.

Lotus Cortina replica sounds kinda fun.....

What was I thinking? The XK engines weigh almost as much as my 6.0, v12. And I was just spit-balling about the Climax.
