MGC 1969 MGCGT I am loking seriously at

This is a car that's about 200 miles away, the owner says he's had the restoration of the body "done professionally" and has a "new engine" installed that runs. He says he has boxes of parts that go to it as well.

His asking price is $6K.

I've passed several emails with him and we have each others phone numbers.

He has the new interior including leather seats stored on shelves. It's not drivable ATM because the new wiring harness isn't connected.
So it needs the interior installed, the wiring connected and everything tested out / unknowns dealt with, trim installed and looks like its missing a brake servo. I also see the windshield is not installed.

Please look over the pictures and let me know what you think.
These are high resolution, so I am linking to them instead of uploading them here:

This looks to be a very solid car. Is it '68 or a '69 (just curious). O/D or no?? (would make no difference to me!) Ask to see receipts for the "professional" work done to date. (They should go with the car, anyway!)

It's worth all of $6k in my opinion (if it's as solid underneath as it is on top...look at the undercarriage, the torsion bar boxes, etc to be sure that a cosmetic-only restoration wasn't done).

Offer him $4k and see what happens. It appears as though he's lost interest in his project and may just want to get it out of the garage. As Tony sez, take a bunch of C-notes (no pun intended) with you and watch his face light up!

I would buy it as is...making sure that you get all of the parts...(yes, it is missing one of the brake servoes)...ie seats, emission equipment if available, servo, etc, eetc, etc.

How much of the re-assembly can you do at home without professional assistance (don't take this question personally...I just don't know your mechanical background)

The MGC is a GREAT car...the GT typically undervalued!

Good luck!

Go for it!

Thanks guys,

This is a 69 MGCGT with OD.
I can finish this car at home. I have the red 69 MGCGT out in the shed in the back yard too. (my old 69 MGCGT project) and I have a lot of MGC parts that I've been gathering for years.
I know I'd get all the stuff he has, we have talked about a lot of it.

I asked him about the undercarriage & suspension in my last email, I expect to get the answers next time he replies.

I started the ball rolling at the bank for a Home Equity line today, I'm willing to liquidate a lot of things to get this car - but if someone else beats me to it I'll be able to cope.

I'm still working on SWMBO - but I am taking her on a vacation at the end of this month, so that should count in my favor!

Rick
You're out of your mind and Vicky will kill you but if that thing is as clean as it looks it will be a real score!

Good Luck (you may need it!)
Bill

Thanks Bill, I needed that

Hey, she brought up the idea of getting a loan today in reference to orthodontia for the children...

I'm sure I could hide a C in there somewhere...

<snip>

One can never have too many MGC's!

I had photos of the car sent to me as well. Nice car, but not a colour I'm looking for. I would much rather have it in the original primrose it came in or at least an authentic-ish BRG. Good luck!

My bank (BOA) isn't being cooperative.

I've got a great job I've been at for a few years, a 25/75 debt to equity ratio (my home is worth about $400K and my total debt is only $96K) and they want to quibble over a disputed item on my CR.

I'm disgusted, I'll be going to the credit union next week.
If it works out with them I'll move all my accounts over, even my mortgage.

Banks are funny things, and today's economy is not the best for credit acquisition. Good luck with your banking issues -- I've used a local credit union for about 10 years now, with excellent results.

Rick,

Good luck with this CGT. Definitely worth the asking price, if just based on the body condition alone.

I don't anything else that can't be sorted out, but as Rick said, make sure you get all the parts. Sounds like it's a lot closer to getting back on the road than your other CGT.

Hope you get everything worked out credit wise. Not a good market atmosphere right now for them, or anyone for that matter. No more to be said; the whole thing just pisses me off to no end.

Good luck with it, and keep us all posted.

Mark

Thanks Mark, I guess that explains it.
I've never felt quite this cold a shoulder from my bank before. I'll be going down to the CU today.

That ad disappeared and I haven't gotten any more emails from the owner. Hopefully its now in the possession of someone who will finish it and drive it.

I'm sorry...I know you were excited about this C/GT!

Potentially it would have been something I could fix & drive quickly. I'm still looking at the long haul on the one I already own, have to amass a few more parts and pieces and tools.

I really ought to just get out there and start the disassembly. If I get rid of the nasty parts that are truly rubbish it will leave only the good (& salvageable) behind and that would be a better thing to look at, thus I'd get more excited about it and want to spend more time with it.

I need to get a couple more air tools - next time I get the chance I'll stop by the new HF store that opened nearby.

BOA are evil, IMO. THEY trashed my CR because some teller of theirs decided to be "creative" with the mortgage payment, applied it to a card balance TWO months in a row... the payment was made with the mortgage slip and account number ON THE CHECK every time. I had FDIC, the VA, the Governor's office, State rep all involved. They did it AGAIN within a year. When the branch manager alluded that all would be taken care of "immediately" I told her I'd WAIT while she made the call... After that was over she asked if there was anything else she could do for me. My response: "Yes. The HEAD of the teller who repeatedly demonstrated incompetence on the corner of THIS DESK would be a nice thing!" I think she was afraid of me after the second incident. :smirk:

Did ya know that they CAN call the reporting "big four" and ~FIX~ a mistake in less than 24 hours?

I paid off the card and refinanced the hovel to get clear of those incompetent uncaring louts.

Did I mention I HATE BOA?!? They can kiss my skinny white, erm, ah... tush. Yeah.
