1958 sprite crank pully problem

part of the back side of the pull on the crank shaft broke off. You think this would has lasted longer than 50 years.
Is it possible to remove it with out pulling the engine?
I need to pull it anyway to repair the transmission. 1st gear has a tooth or 2 missing. But wanted to wait till spring to so this.

No way without pulling or at least lifting the engine about 4 inchs.
 
If you undo the engine mounts and put a block of wood undedr the oilpan and a jack under the wood, you can jack the motor up far enough to get the pulley clear of the frame member. Don't remove your steering rack, it has nothing to do with the process whether the engine comes or goes.
This might be a good time to consider putting on a 1275 harmonic balancer as a replacement upgrade.

Might wish to consider releasing the four tranny mount bolts as well before you jack it up.

Thanks for all the help
looks like I will just pull the engine when my son gets home from college on Christmas break. Once the motor mounts are loose, it is not that hard to go the rest of the way. The hardest part is tagging all the wires as they have no color left. I thank you for this suggestion 1275 harmonic balancer. Anything to get some more vibration out is big plus.

I was going by my sons 1500. Had to remove the engine mounts, jack up the engine, and lower the rack. If you can remove the pulley without lowering the rack on the earlier cars that is the way to go.

Only three wires to remove that need taged. One to dizzy, and two to the generator. The other is a cable to the starter.
 
I also remove the bonnet to give me more room.
Never knew it could be done with it on.
 
Hehe, engine can be pulled with the bonnet on but it is easer for sure with it off.
