Lee - in the Blower book:
"Remove the clamping nut from the telescopic adjustment clamp and extract the clamp and bolt. This will allow the wheel to be withdrawn to its fullest extent and enable the plated helical sleeve to be contracted so that the key at the upper end of the column, which engages with the keyway in the splined adjustable shaft, may be withdrawn.
This will release the steering wheel and telescopic assembly, which can be removed for further dismantling if necessary."
There's a drawing showing some of this. Let me know if you need the drawing also.

You can usually find a workshop manual on ebay, etc.
The Blower book I have gives lots of tips and hints on MG work. Published in the early 1950s.

I've got an original, but you can find it on Amazon, Abebooks, etc.

Hi Tom
Reading that thread I think I may take an angle grinder to the old wheel as I could be there days given the issues others have had removing the wheel from the spline
I'm replacing the broken original wheel with a Les Leston wood rimmed wheel which needs a boss
So that may be the best option
