T-Series 1952 MGTD spark plugs.

So I'm checking to pick up some new spark plugs for my ride and looking to see if they are 1/2" reach (as per the engine ID on the chassis plate). Turns out PO has 3/4" reach. I measure the hole and sure enough it's 3/4 inch reach. More investigation shows the TD2 engine had been swapped out with a TD engine (early number of 5232). The early TD engine should have come with a head that required a 1/2" reach. Head casting number is 168422. I'm not sure what happened here. In my travels to get to this point I read that certain year TD heads were not interchangeable with earlier blocks because the water passage holes were not aligning. The engine is not overheating (no loss of coolant anywhere)but does run a bit warm. Any ideas on this would be a great relief. What started out as a simple task feels like it just got a little more complicated.

Keep checking the coolant and stop worrying. My TDs (3) all ran a bit hot and pumped coolant out the overflow on a hot day.

168422 is a later head with round water holes. The change from 1/2" plugs to 3/4" plugs was at TD2 #22735.
The early head, which would match your engine # had banana shaped water holes. It is OK to use a later head on an early engine if the correct head gasket is used.
The later heads had improved water flow around the exhaust seats.
As I understand it, using a Head off a 1500 (XPEG) on an XPAG engine is a no-no.

I think you can get a lot more information, and several nights reading here:

Thanx to Jim and PD for your assistance. Big relief on my end. Do you think the correct head gasket would be with the banana shaped holes or is there a special gasket for this combo?

If you have a banana hole block, and a round hole head, you need to use a banana hole gasket.
Only if you have a round hole block and a round hole head should you use a round hole gasket.
