Saw one today....unlike LBC owners who NEVER wave to a Jag, this guy waved at me first!

1802 Beemer

Sounds like a very early one!

The oldest BMW I've ever seen was built around 1930. :highly_amused:

(Dave: I wave at all interesting cars when I'm in one of my MGs....and even if I'm in the Miata)

For those unsure, 1802 Beemer,

Narrower kidneys in the grille. Squarer body. I saw it, had to look up what it was. Oddly shaped...not a 2002i or any of the older ones you normally see.

I think that you mean a BMW 1800,last made in '65. The road tests back then said thatit was a nice driver's car. - Doug

The BMW 1500 was introduced in 1962 and they were dubbed "Neu Klasse" sedans, the design and what it evolved into was what saved BMW and helped create the sports sedan and "ultimate driving machine" image that BMW has cultivated and grown with since then.

The 1500 was a 4 door sedan, and was later offered as the 1600, 1800, and 2000, all indicating engine size in ccs. They had 4 wheel independent suspension, and overhead cam engines, and were considered good handling cars with good performance with the larger engines. While the sedans were successful, they really hit it out of the park with the coupe versions, which looked a lot like the sedans, but had two doors, and were lighter and therefore faster and sportier. The 1600-2, (2 door) followed by the 2002 got glowing reports in the trade mags and sold well in the USA and around the world.

(Edit) BMW did make an 1802, but it was never officially sold in the states to my knowledge, but some may have found their way in by now, good spot.

Greg (new 2002 owner this fall)

I've never heard of the BMW 1802... North America got the BMW 2002 of course, and there was the BMW 1602 over in Europe (1.6 engine), I've seen the occasional example of a 1602 over here, privately imported of course...

There were a fair number of the 1600, 1800 cars imported to the US, but as said above, the 2002 was what put BMW on the US car buying radar.

In the late fifties and early sixties the motorcycles are what I recall seeing the BMW badge on first. Not until the 1600 did their cars start showing up where we lived.
