1500 Trans VB overhaul kit

I have a 78 1500 with a hard to shift trans. I replaced all the clutch hydraulics and cylinders along with a new clutch, pressure plate, bearing and all related wear points pins, pushrods, etc. It is still difficult and sporatic on shifts in all gears. Sometimes double clutch helps but it is very difficult to drive.

My question, is the trans overhaul kit displayed in the Vic Brit catalog worth a shot? layshaft, syncros, seals, main/front bearings, cage bearing and needle rollers. Is it most likely the syncros?

When I changed the clutch I took a look inside and I didnt see any chewed gears or obvious damage.

If I am going to do the overhaul kit, is there something else I need to do as long as I am in there?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

after having rebuilt 2 1275 cases, my first response would be to wait on the rebuild kit until you really look inside the box. i found that i had to removed the shifting forks and get to the laygear to actually see the wear/damage. in some cases, the parts in the rebuild kits were not all needed and in fact other pieces not in the kit were shot. a good example for me were the roller bearings which were in very good shape. the laygear, 1st gear, reverse gear were shot. the syncro hubs were all gunked up. some parts just needed to be cleaned.

Before buying the overhaul kit, I would disassemble the transmission and inspect your components. Mine only needed synchros and bearings. The layshaft and a few other components that come with the kit were in perfect condition on mine. I save a lot of $$ buying just what I needed individually.

And most likely your problem is the synchros.

I go back-and-forth on this. The "kit" is fairly comprehensive and I really don't much enjoy pulling gearboxes. The best thing (IMO) is to tear it down and make a list, check it against the "kit" contents and go accordingly. Most times it's just sound engineering practice to renew as much of the thing as possible. Forks wear, seals deteriorate, layshaft and bearings usually NEED replacing, renew all baulk rings just for insurance... Hard to tell what's worn unless it's in pieces.

All that said, Morris is pro'lly right: "And most likely your problem is the synchros."

Thanks for the feedback guys. I will probably tear it down and see what needs to be ordered if possible but probably at least changing whats in the "kit".

The rebuild kit I got from VB didn't come with any gears. It came with the needle bearings, keepers, synchro's, gaskets, and a layshaft. All of those things are pretty much consumable anyway. I found my reverse gear and 1/2 synchro hub were shredded. Caught heck trying to find the right synchro hub since there are two different number toothed reverse gears out there now. Pull it apart but if the gears are grinding, I would try new gear oil first and make sure the shifting forks and synchro hubs are working freely.
