1500 on a stand?

So as the Junkpile Spit project progresses it would appear I have a ton of extra parts laying about to include a spare 1500. Despite sitting outside for years with no sparkplugs it isn't stuck. I think that's mostly thanks to the muddauber nests in the holes, intake, and exhaust ports! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif I'm planning on rebuilding this motor for ??? at a future date. Question is, how the #$&*^ do you guys put them on an engine stand?(and to think I always gave Bruce grief for building his motors on the floor...) Anyhow, what do you guys do? Thanx! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I generally bolt the backplate to the block, and then attach the stand to the backplate. Haven't had any problems yet. Of course you can't install the flywheel this way, but that's no big deal.

Really? I wasn't sure the back plate was strong enough.I'll hafta give it a try then!
 
Saw an interesting fix for this problem over at my machinist's place. What he did was to cut a steel plate biger than the motor mount area on the side of the block. Next he drilled out the patern for the motor mount boss then welded it to tube to fit his stand. So he mounts the engine sideways from the mount.
 
Whatever ya'll do to mount an engine on a stand make darn sure that you don't scrimp on the bolts that you use. I personally wouldn't use anything less than a Grade 8, and then I am picky where I buy those. I think that you are playing with fire if you use a Grade 5. I know this has been covered in previous posts but safety cannot be overstressed.

I would suspect that it may bend. Normally the back plate has a nice stiff iron casting attached to it! I would only try this with a spare back plate.
Personally I am putting my 1300 engine together on the floor.

I'm with you there on the #8's. Most of the stuff I've messed with in the past are BBF's and 60's Caddy stuff. As of recent the stand in mention had a 4.0 Jeep 6 on it. With the motor bolted to the stand the front of it sagged about 2" or so. Pretty scary when you consider it's rated @ 750#'s! I haven't gotten the clutch/flywheel off this thing yet because the pressure plate bolts are pretty much rusted in place. I'll get a picture posted once I figure it out...
