1500 clutch release bearing removal -how to do it?

I have a 1500 with a clutch release bearing that I need to replace. I've gotten the sleeve/release bearing out of the bell housing but am wondering how to get the release bearing off of the sleeve.

The manual speaks about some special tool no. 1BG1270 which I have no idea what it might be or where to get it. Does anyone have suggestions as how to get it off and then put a new one on.

Thanks

It's a press fit on the sleeve. Getting the old one off is no problem, just support the back side of the bearing, and press it off.
Be very careful when installing the new one, pressing only on the inner sleeve of the bearing. You may have to fab up a small piece of tube to reach, but whatever you do, don't press on the fat part of the bearing. You'll crush the housing and destroy the bearing. After pressing a little bit, stop and make sure the bearing is free to rotate. Continue until it's fully seated.

I have a 12 ton shop press for doing bearings, and I use a cold chisel to take the old one off with. You can get one cheap for 99.00 here:

It is a useful investment and sure you may not use it much, but when you need one they are great to have around.

Hope this helps ya.

The guy I took mine to (William Whitmoyer of Old Sports Car Garage) just rigged up something where he used a bearing splitter to support the old bearing, then used an impact socket with his hydraulic press to drive the sleeve out. Then he used another impact socket the size of the bearing's inner race to press it on.
