1500 camshaft question

Well, finally completed the tear down on my motor. Bad news... the fuel pump lobe on the cam is gouged up pretty bad. Not sure what the PO did, but it explains why my car has an electric fuel pump and the mechanical pump was disconnected.

Question is... I've heard a good machine shop can weld and regrind the lobe... is it worth the expense or better to just spend the $300 bucks and buy a new cam from Moss?

Other than the cam issue, the rest of the motor looks great. Must have had at least one rebuild along the way as the car does have over 141,000 miles.

A new cam is $300? I'm a bit surprised by that. What would a "stock" cam be from VB? I'd expect welding and grinding the existing cam to be very expensive.

Are you considering repairing/replacing the cam to keep the car original? Are there other issues with the cam? There's nothing wrong with the electric fuel pump unless you're going for originality. I'd be inclined to leave it unless there are other issues that need attention.

If Moss's prices are that high, I'd consider putting in a new, mild performance cam from elsewhere instead. Regardless, get a whole kit, don't run old lifters on a new cam.

BTW, I checked the SpitBits web site. (A '77 Midget does have the 1500cc Triumph engine doesn't it?) A new 1500 cam there is $255 + $4.50 per tappet. Or you can buy a reground cam for $100 +$75 core. (I would think with a worn out pump lobe you may not get the core charge refunded though).

As mentioned, unless you're going for originality, I don't see any reason to replace the cam.

Yes, the '77 had the Triumph 1493cc motor. The car did run ok with the electric pump, but I was thinking that if I had to get a new cam, trying to find one that would give a little better performance. Does anyone know who may sell a street performance cam for the 1500 motor? I've searched the net all over and can't seem to find any performance cams.

I bought a Kent th2k cam from Victoria British. Been pretty happy with it.

VB lists new and reman cams for 200 and 130 respectively.

I purchased the Kent TH5 cam and have also been very happy with it. I understand TSI (www.tsimportedautomotive.com) sells cams as well. To find Kent cams, go to APTfast.com for a US distributor. I had mine ordered directly, but it's a bit of a hassle and I didn't realize they're actually the same cam. I got the whole cam kit, including double springs and lifters for a pretty reasonable price.
