1275 Pilot Bushing... Ready to install

Okay... I thought this would be fairly simple (compared to my experiences getting the old one out anyway). However, seeing that I destroyed the first one during installation (and thus gained more experience in the removal department); I thought I'd better solicit a little advice.

I have a short wooden dowel that is slightly larger than the diameter of the pilot bushing. I plan to gently hammer the bushing into place (into the end of the crank) using the dowel. Does this seem reasonable? I have soaked the bushing in oil for 24 hours. Any tips from the BTDT crowd?

How did you damage the first one?

Use a soft drift like the wooden dowel so you don't damage the bushing when hammering it in. Try and keep it "square" so it goes in straight. Apart from freezing the thing with something like dry ice to shrink it a little, there is nothing else you can do. (I've never seen a recommendation for freezing the pilot bushings... it's just a thought if you're having a "fit" problem).

Kurtis, the dowel method will work just fine. I use a piece of Delrin rod that I turned down slightly smaller than the OD, and then further turned a pilot on the end that just fits the ID.
As Doug mentions, keep the bushing square, and don't get too heavy with the hammer.

Thanks guys... got it in fine this time. I think I just whacked it a little too hard the first time (and perhaps didn't have it lined up properly).
