Does the stock oil filter cartrige canister on a 1275 hang down, or is it like the original 948 type that are upside down and spill all of the oil when it is removed? Can't seem to find a good picture.
I am slowly, gathering all of the stuff together, bolting it all on and painting. After this, I will roll it out ot the way and get back to work on my tub.

Paul, it hangs down, and I've never seen one mounted the other way on a 948. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif
Why not change over to a spin on type, as the later ('70 and up) 1275's had?
Jeff

Spin-on is the way to go and you can actually get the filter at your local auto parts store. In fact you can increase oil capacity by finding a taller filter than is called for and there is room for that!!

This pic may help!

I just recently converted to a spin on. If you are looking for the original canister and a new filter let me know.

BOZ;
I don't have any canister for my 1275. I saw one on ebay which I probably need before converting to a spin on. Tell me more, what I need etc. I think I have the pipe etc. Not sure how to contact you direct.

Mike,

what does it take to convert the 1275 to a spin on oil filter? what is the part number for the larger capacity filter that you are using?

Thanks!

I just went out and looked in my stuff. I have the pipe, the canister (screw on type) and an angle fitting (about 45 degrees), that goes between the canister fitting and where it bolts to the block. Maybe I just need the adapter for the spin on, and maybe I don't need the angle fitting. Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you

Paul,

The spin on adapter is the way to go if you are not looking for original. VB sells a nice adapter starting at where the canister bolts up (one bolt). Check with Tony to get the adapter. He can get you a deal.

The angle fitting might allow for an even longer cannister. Once you have the thread specs and seal-ring diameter, you can open boxes and find a filter that will fit the bill! There are only a few different set-ups that filter manufacturers make, and a little research goes a long way in what willwork!!

Fram 3600 is what I use. I agree with a spin in, All it takes is one misinstalled canister and You'll see the reason why.

Do the conversion. I got the one from Moss, it works just fine. I had a lot of trouble getting the cannister to seat right on the old-style filter. Blew 2 of them out while on the road (requiring a tow home). Spin on one doesn't have that problem.

The Moss adaptor replaces the pipe and the entire fitting. I think that the VB one just screws into the base of the original fitting. Were I to do it again, I'd go the VB route.

I converted as well. Too many old memories of putting off oil changes because of the mess involved. I think Mr. Donald would be pleased to see the spin offs on Bugeyes. It makes sense.

It's just one of those things that improved over time and makes sense to switch!! I've had the old cartidge type go south on me while out on the road and leak oil out everywhere - good for belly-pan rust prevention, but not much else!!. Have never had a problem with a spin-on unit!!

I actually heard mine go "pop" and all sorts of oil started dumping out. My next upgrade was the spin-on adaptor. That very week, in fact. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Seems to be a very common thread to all these posts hehehe! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Searched but could not find that number listed! If you have a Victoria British catalogue, look on pp79, item # 17 under the heading oil filters. that is the part you need although they are pretty pricey in the catalogue. Check wrecking yards for a Spridget!
