1275 leak @ oil pump

The hole at the bottom of the oil pump cavity..can I tap it and put a plug in it? I put a new pump in and it leaked out the escape passage past the bottom of the pump. What is this hole for? Why is there a hole which allows a direct passage to the atmosphere? Where the original pumps using this hole for a return into the oil pan? 1968 sprite Mark IV

First of all welcome. Do you have the oil pump cover installed in the rear engine plate? The hole I think you are referring to allows leakage to return to the oil pan by draining back into the block. This should not be open to atmosphere since the rear engine plate captures the oil pump cover (tin can) against the block. If you have pictures of your set up that would help if I am misunderstanding you.

Yep, sounds like no oil pump cover, Ok you guys are scaring me again /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Well that makes since considering I don't have that cover. It also makes since that the guy I bought the car from also had an oil leak he couldn't fix. The parts magazine i have (lcm) shows the tin can cover but does not sell it. Know where I could get one??

From someone like Hap who uses them for ash trays. LOL

Rob O situation illustrates a good point. We get into trouble because sometimes we don't know what we don't know.

We'll look at a setup on the car, whether its mechanical or electrical and think 'Oh...that's the way its supposed to be'. Then we find out that the dreaded PO bodged something up.

Only experience can help with that, whichis why this board is so helpful. That and reading manuals with lots of pictures.
