1275 Engine Rebuild Cost

Ok what do you guys think a good price to rebuild a 1275 would be assuming the major internal parts were in good shape. Im trying to decide if I want to pay for all of the machining and head work or just pay for an entire rebuild.

What do you guys think a rebuild should cost?

Ben,

I didn't keep an accurate tally on my Sprite (after running up a tab of over $2,700 on my TR4 a couple of years earlier!), but I'd guess I put around $1,200-1,300 into my 1275 when I rebuilt it. I did all the disassembly and reassembly. My crank was in good shape - just new bearings. I did have to have the cylinders bored (new pistons and rings). I replaced all the normal stuff... oil pump, lifters, timing chain, etc.

Oh, and and I got the head rebuilt and everything balanced for free. Actually, it cost me a set of main bearings. The shop that did the balancing and head work couldn't find one of my bearing pairs when I went to pick everything up. I tried to pay him, but he said to just wait until he found the bearings (a guy who was out that day supposedly knew where they were). I came back the next day, and still no bearings (he forgot to ask the guy, and he had already left). He told me he would call me when he found them. He never called, so I bought another set and figured we were even. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ben, it depends on how exotic you want to get. I put $5600 in a very hot street 1098 a few years ago, but a stock 1275 shouldn't cost more than $1500~$2000. That's figuring new pistons, cam, lifters, having the crank done, ARP hardware, rod reconditioning, etc. One of my rules has always been "When in doubt, throw it out."
I have to admit, I may go overboard on a rebuild, but all of my engines LAST!

my 1275 was completely rebuild and painted from head to toe for just less than $1,800. i agree with the "in doubt" comment from bugeye58. It's a lot, but after the restoration work is done, you can't just put any engine back in. I also had the cyclinders bore.

I just did a 1275 with only rings, bearings, gaskets, an oil pump and a head job, it was under $400.
New pistons, cam, and a bore should be under a grand.

i will add, that my engine had one piston with a hole blown through the top (detonation) and the valves and guides were shot. that was only the beginning. the engine had sat for about 25 years. i figured it would be at least $1,200. i guess if you are able to do some of the work yourself, you could save a couple hundred.
