1098 Side cover gaskets,,, arggghhhh

Ok,

My 1098 is running pretty well and while it was out to mate with the datsun 5 speed I pulled the pan and replaced its gasket, also checked the scroll thing at the rear main and centered it etc. Oil doesn't leak from there but the side covers for the pushrod/lifter areas, whereas the rear one has a lip that holds the rubber seal is firmly in place and does'nt appear to be leaking,,,,, the front one that has the oil seperatior neck and can on it is puking oil out and down the drivers side of the engine. I was very careful to avoid squeezing the gasket out too!

Anyone have any tips for getting the forward side cover to stay in place corectly and not leak. I can't beleive I am having this much trouble with a simple side cover!

Jay,

The 'usual' cause from leaking at the side chests are from someone tightening the mounting bolt really tight to stop any leaking. This deforms the lip around the edge and/or the cover itself and causes a leak. They then tighten it more and the result is deformation and a worse leak. Pull the side cover and check the edges and the main body to be sure it is not deformed. You could cheat and use some RTV at the gasket.

Thans Biff,

Upon cleaning everything off with acetone i think I found the problem. Seams there is a ridge indented into the rubber gasket where it is evident i had gotten the silly thing on there crooked! Dang it.... So I am re-installing it now.

Excellent, hope that solves it.

Jay, the rear cover is the improved version, made with added rigidity. As far as I know, they never made the improvement on the cover with the oil separator on it. You could buy one of the later style covers, and modify it by welding the oil separator from the old cover on. But, the hold down bolt for the new style takes a seal on the bolt on both sides of the cover. A 1/8" long piece of 1/4" fuel hose will work, or a thick cross section "O" ring will do the trick to seal the bolt.
This is one place where an inch pound torque wrench comes in handy. Not over 25 inch pounds.

Jay,

Sorry to hijack this thread, but how's the interior coming along? Will it be ready for the Conclave next month?

Thanks for the tips Jeff.
I think I have the thing on there pretty well now but I don't trust it, just looks too easy for the gasket to get squeezed out. So I may take another rear and do the mod you spoke of.

Mike, while I have the new seat covers and a pair of seats I baught from Ray, the rest of the interior is kind of on hold as my red panel kit is on indefinate back order and Paul at SCC does not know how long it'll be before it arrives. Windshield should be here tuesday or wednesday.

Just got home an hour ago from he Lotus Owners Gathering (LOG27) up in snow mass CO. Was quite a treat getting to speak to Alain D'Cardinae for about 20 minutes yesterday morning, very funny guy. Emerson Fittipaldi spoke at dinner last night too, seems like a real nice guy. Also got to met peter Egan and his wife Barb and BS for a while.
