Hi all,

Found this 100m Chassis number BN2L230735 for sale.

It is an estate sale and seller claims factory M. No docs

Is this BN2L230735 a factory 100m Chassis

thanks

Hey AH67,
No way to confirm unless you get a British Motors Heritage Trust Certificate. You could e-mail Bill Meade with 100M Registry to see if he has the car registered but if no docs available, that might be a real long shot. You say "chassis", is this a complete car or a basket case with that chassis number ? If you can get confirmation of the chassis number, still a lot of homework to do to confirm it is really a 100M. Could just be a chassis/vin plate ? Suggest you again get hold of Bill Meade( see website below) and get the info needed to confirm. A fair amount of fakes out there and a lot of owner or dealer modified BN2's with a LeMans kit added. Good luck and let us know what you come up with !
Regards,
Mike

If you have access to the car, there are a couple things that would indicate 'factory 100M' provenance, and if they're there then getting the BMIHT inquiry would be worthwhile. Bear in mind that getting the cert can take a while, and if it's a real M the car may not be for sale long.

Specifically, look at/for:

1) the distributor. The M used a special distributor--there are two part nos. that I don't know offhand--and this would be difficult to fake
2) the M had special carbs; not just any old H6's. They have hand-scripted markings that, again, would be difficult to fake
3) the original louvred bonnet is different than the aftermarkets but, sorry, I don't know the details
4) the special bent shroud bracket that is used to clear the cold air box is not sold by any suppliers that I know of, though it would be fairly easy to make one with a metal brake if you had the dimensions
5) I think the sway bar for the Ms is thicker than a regular 100s, but that would be easy to fake

Aside from those, it's relatively easy to build up a car that looks like an 'M' (anybody can bend the front radiator support). Perhaps Bill can supply the distributor and carburettor info; if not the concours guys know them.

Like Bob says above, the distributor will have the code 40520A on late 100M's, reproductions do not have this code. The H6 carbs will have the raised number AUC6040X as well as the hand etched numbers 6053 on front carb and 6047 on rear carb. Most of the other parts are available so stress that you have to get the Brit Heritage certificate to start the whole conversation. Saying it is a factory 100M is about as easy as saying a Pontiac Lemans is a GTO. Means nothing without the proper documentation.
Regards
Mike
