The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie.

The Great War begins.

Two percent of the world's population died as a result of that war.

Austria/Hungarian empire invaded Serbia on this day (July 28th). The Archduke was assassinated about a month earlier.

Mark - thanks for the correction. My fumble fingers meant the war started 28 July, but the assassination was 28 June.

Anyway - the world changed.

Right-o. And of course the REAL war began in earnest in August (those "guns of August") when other powers were swept in.
I'm very fortunate to get to visit Flanders Field in late August (just a month away). Looking forward to my own sweep through Belgium.

And the assassination served really only as a justification not as a true root cause. Emperor Franz Joseph was said to not care for his nephew and wife, and didn't find it to be personal loss.
