100 rear diff - nut torque

Hi guys,

I pulled the differential out of the rear axle pumpkin so I could make a new gasket to, hopefully, prevent the gear oil drip drip drip. I have it all back together but I have not been able to find any reference to the proper torque for the ~10 or 12 nut which hold it in. I assume that tightening the nuts real good will help prevent the gear oil leak at this joint but I really don't want to go too far and snap a stud.

Any ideas on proper torque for these nuts?

Thanks

John

probably just snugged up enough to sandwich the gasket tight, kind of like an oil filter today, ie, tighten up gently in a manner similar to head torquing then another 2/3 of a full circle so you dont crush the gasket too much

Those are 3/8" fine--24tpi I believe--studs. The nominal torque--from the charts--is 30-35 ft-lbs, which I've always used with no problems. If the gasket is thin paper--it should be--you can't crush it much. I put a thin skin of gasket sealer--I prefer Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket or Hylomar--on both sides of the gasket.

If you still have a leak you'll want to have a look at the pinion seal (under the U-joint flange).
