What's the scoop on this? How do folks paint in the silver bit around the gauges? Does someone sell a mask to mask off the black while you paint in the silver? Lay it down to me brothers and sisters.....

I think that the "mask" is called masking tape.

You won't get a very good job if you don't remove the gages & switches. Even then, it won't likely come out very good unless you remove the dash & lay if flat with enough room to work. The only hard part of removing the gages is to not break the temp gage capillary tube. It has to be disconnected at the radiator & threaded back through all of the holes including the dash.

If you just want a quick color coat, mask off (with tape) everything that you don't want painted silver & paint away.

While not original for my car, I decided to go with a painted dash instead of covering it with vinyl.

I took a slightly different (and very time consuming) approach. The entire raised area where the gauges reside has been engine-turned (damacening).

To do your dash as original, you could paint the main portion and then mask off and paint the gauge area. Spraying a clearcoat over the entire finished dash will "melt" away the masking ridge.

I am not aware of any commercially available mask for that purpose (and if it's anything like the MGB wheel mask, it wouldn't work anyway).
