10 Thou End Float - Should I Worry Yet?

As part of my winter maintenence/repair work, I measured the crank shaft end float on my TR250 for the first time today - 10 thousands of an inch, which is out of spec according to the book (.006-.008). But should I start to worry yet? Or just remeasure it in a couple of thousand miles and check again? And if I do replace the thrust washers, is there a prefered option? (I seem to remember someome doing an uprated "all brass" or "all bronze" replacement to the white metal OEM washers?)

Rob, out of curosity what did you use to measure the end float. Is the engine all together? I measured mine recently using a jury rigged setup. I put a straight edge up against the crank after pushing it back. I then pushed in the clutch and measured the gap. I got .007 which is within the allowed range but I have wondered since how accurate the reading I got was using this method. Anyone have any comments?

You really need to use a dial gauge for any accuracy. Rull of thumb, if you can feel it with your fingernail, you need to change it. Recently change mine, bought all sizes, only needed to use stock size. Very simple to change. Good time to add that steel front bridge seal.

Don't worry about it, just replace the thrust washers. It will give you a chance to see how good your oil is keeping things clean /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Are you using an OEM type clutch or an upgrade? How many miles do you have on the bearings?
 
Bill, you are correct. Now that the radiator and fan are out of the car I am able to use my diak indicator. I did it a couple of times and each time I got about .0045. So I am well within range. Thanks, I feel alot better knowing my thrust washers have alot of life left in them. I only do about 1000 or so miles a year so I have a while before I have to worry about them.
 
I have installed the Scott Helms thrush washer but havent run it yet. The washer is beefier looking, there is more surface area. It doesnt just slip in it has a certain amount of spring load to it. When you order he wants the exact thickness that you want--cant just order .005 over.
