1" -20tpi die needed

Hey folks,

I'm looking for a 1" -20 tpi rethreading die to clean the dog nut threads on my 6cyl. Healey crankshaft. Can't locate one through my usual machinery sources so thought I'd ask the crew if anyone has one to borrow/loan/purchase or can steer me in the right direction?

Cheers,
John

MMC has them listed
https://www.mcmaster.com/
P/N 26005A222

But at that price, I'd be thinking about a 20 tpi "thread restoring file" instead.

Thanks Randall,

I searched McMaster but didn't find that one .. probably because I looked for the hex type die that can be used with a wrench.

That is too pricey (but in line with McMaster prices /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif ) and I did consider using a thread file. I'll see if anyone else has a cheaper lead .. especially since this falls in to that 'probably only use one time' category.

Cheers,
John

Hello John,

I replied in your AH thread but another thought has crossed my mind and that is if you have a good machine shop locally who has thread chasers. Used normally to smooth off lathe cut threads.

Hi Randall,

I guess I flunked 'searching for stuff' today. I had checked my Rutland catalog but didn't find it there.

Appreciate your taking the time to find it for me!

Cheers,
John

Hi Alec,

The crank is already installed in the rebuilt motor so that makes it tough to take somewhere. I'll just order a die since they are avail. at not too much cost.

Cheers,
John

John, if you can wait until Monday I may be able to locate one for you to borrow. I'll let you know what we find in the "odd old tool bin"

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the offer! Sure, I can wait until Monday. I still have a bunch of painting and assembly work to do.

Cheers,
John

That would be a NS thread; which according to my chart also includes 1-14, 1-16, 1-18 and 1-32.

Hmm, my chart says a 1" BSC is 24 tpi rather than 20. Does BSC cover multiple pitches in one diameter ?

And does your 1-20 CEI interchange with 1-20 UNEF ?

If you just need to clean up the threads I have had success with an appropriately sized nut cut half way or so down each flat (not sure if that makes sense - I mean three cuts in total, perpendicular to the threads). I saw this mentioned in Practical Classics magazine a few months ago and gave it a try - I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked.

Just a thought - much cheaper than a die...
Cheers
Alistair

If this is a one off job might it not make sense to bring it to a shop and have them do it? Even if it costs the same - you could be and back to work quickly
