Dolly was singing on local radio and television shows in Nashville by the time she was 10 and debuted at the Grand Ole Opry when she was 13. In 1964 she moved to Nashville, where other musicians quickly recognized her talent as a songwriter. Over her career, she would write songs made famous by Kenny Rogers, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, and others.

Fun fact: Dolly wrote “I Will Always Love You” herself and, crucially, retained the publishing rights to the composition. So when Whitney Houston recorded her enormously successful version for The Bodyguard in 1992, Parton received songwriter/publishing royalties from record sales, radio play, performances, and other uses (I've heard estimates of around $10 million. Years earlier, Elvis Presley had wanted to record the song, but his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, insisted that Parton give up a large portion of the publishing rights. Dolly refused—even though she desperately wanted Elvis to record it.

Parton later used some of the money from Whitney's version to buy an office/retail complex in a historically Black Nashville neighborhood. She affectionately referred to the property as “the house that Whitney built.”
