Hardtop: How to save the A-pillars

The rubber seal that sits on top of the windshield and A-pillars doesn't appear to offer much protection between the aluminum hardtop frame and the A-pillars. Am I missing a buffer piece in the corners, or is what I have installed all there was? The car was repainted a few years back and is pristine. I'm wondering if there is a way to protect the paint on the top of the A-pillars when the hardtop gets installed. Does anyone have a solution?
