I’m hoping together some helpful tips on how to improve my ‘59 Sprite. After a great deal of tuning work the car is running best it’s ever been. However it is still a bit Rich in the carbs but when I test drive the heat builds up in the engine bay and transfers thru the firewall making it very uncomfortable. Also, after my last 45 minute test drive I became sick from the vapors coming into the cabin. The heater is off but the gearbox tunnel is sucking everything up and pushing it thru to the cockpit. Notes: I have a stock setup with dual H1’s, original manifolds and exhaust. I have an O2 sensor on the exhaust showing 13’s-14’s. I did have the heater valve open at cylinder 4, and I neglected to reinstall the fresh air hose to the heater core (but I didn’t realize this until afterwards) any tips are appreciated. Thank you

Best practices for insulating/sealing footwell from summer heat

Hi Ed - a week later and you got no comments or advice? Wow. Maybe our BCF forum moderators should take note ...
Assuming you already have carpeting in the cockpit, and you've closed any gaps or holes which might be allowing engine/manifold heat to enter the cockpit - here's what I did on my TR3:
Under the carpet I placed double sided temp insulation similar to this:
or this:
Note: don't glue it in place!
Any idea why engine fumes are coming into the cockpit? I assume you've got the hood (soft top) up so there's less fresh air coming in?

Thank you for the reply. I just pickled up a roll of similar insulation material. Good to know about not glueing down. I had a number of items left open during the work I did to the car. I left off the cover to the gearbox opening tunnel and also the heater vents were open but did not have the fresh air hose mounted so any air in the engine bay was being escorted right down to my feet. I just received my order from Moss with all new firewall seals so hopefully this will make a big difference. Thanks again

I have tried sound deadening materials, like RoadKill, which offer some heat protection, but there are products mainly aimed at heat shielding. One such product I've heard about is DEI floor and tunnel shield:
