I read up on the process and understand what to do but instead of draining the gas tank to make the sender float go to the bottom when adjusting for Empty, would it not be possible to just press the float down with an improvised tool or would that wreck the gauge somehow.? Karl

Pushing the float down should not do any damage to the sender provided that you do not bend the arm, buy you can simulate the empty position of the sender just by disconnecting the wire to the gauge at the sender end and grounding it. The gauge should go to empty (with ignition on). The sender is pretty much grounded at empty as far as the gauge is concerned. You only really need to move the float if you want to check the mid position reading. Full can slso be simulated just by removing the wire at the sender end and not grounding it. The gauge should go to full (ignition on). If this does not happen as described, message me and we can do some further fault diagnosis.
