BJ8 Choke Cable Knob

I have triple Weber carbs on my BJ8 so I need a longer than normal choke cable. However, I want to keep the original choke knob for an authentic looking dash.

Has anyone successfully removed that knob from the cable so that it can be used with a different cable? If so, how did you do it? It seems to be permanently bonded. Any clever tricks that worked?

Thanks.

Can you modify the bracket that holds the two choke cables ?
This looks very doable if you want to keep the OEM Knob.
Pretty sure if you stare at it long enough you will figure something out.

You’re right, most of those original BJ8 choke knobs were either crimped or bonded on pretty tight. Some owners have had success using a bit of gentle heat (like from a hair dryer, not a torch) to soften any adhesive, combined with carefully twisting with padded pliers.

Slightly off the subject. Any suggestions on how to tighten the flange to the wood dash so it doesn't turn when engaging the choke. Practically impossible to access and won't stay tightened.

One trick I’ve seen work is using a thin rubber or friction washer between the flange and the wood to help grip and prevent rotation.

It could be a couple of things causing this. One is the detente in the cable end that holds the cable once turned has worn out or the flat spot of the hole in the dash has rounded off. I had the latter issue which existed when I bought the car. At the time I took the opportunity to replace the cable and I attached a wire snake when I removed it so I could easily pull the new cable back through. To fix the rounded off hole, I sliced a piece of wooden dowel and epoxied it where the flat spot used to be. I intentionally left it a little large so I could sand it back for a tight fit. As you can see in the picture, I removed the tach which provided much easier access. I'd think if your cable end is loose enough not to hold, you can probably undo the thin nut by hand or by pushing the flats of the nut with a flat head screwdriver. I also replaced the thin nut behind the dash with a "coupling" nut available at local hardware stores. Being longer you can get a wrench on it to get it nice and tight. I hope some of this info helps with your issue.
