Hi, Just after I got my steering arm back together I found electronic fuel pump never reaches pressure but does make normal clicking sound that never stops. So I removed pre-pump filter thinking it was clogged but not the case. So it looks to me like my 15 year old electronic fuel pump is defective. Any ideas on what to check or where to buy another one. Moss Motors has one on page A40 for$359.99. Thanks Marty

I trust your carbs are not overflowing. When mine doesn’t stop, I find a/ the float bowls are overflowing. There is a check valve in the pump. That’s probably leaking. Probably something is in it.

Is is clicking quickly or slowly? Rapid clicking is usually caused by an air leak on the intake side; slow clicking, as John suggested, may be a leak on the output side. The fact it's trying to pump is actually a good sign; possibly a damaged diaphragm or, again as John suggested, an issue with a valve (there's one on both intake and output IIRC). No clicking would indicate something in the electronics and, unless you're a whiz are nigh impossible to diagnose and repair (unlike points-type).

Looks like there's a shortage; possibly why Moss is gouging. I hope SU Burlen isn't going out of business, but they seem to be OOS on a lot of stuff:

Bob thanks for info. I have had car for 10 years and it clicks like always when sitting for long period of time then after a few seconds it would slow then stop. But then, after day or so of sitting it used to click rapidly for only couple of seconds then slow down then stop I think. Not sure about stopping because I would have started car by then. Now it's rapid clicking never stops. Fuel floats do not leak fuel so no overflow. This happened a year ago and replaced pre filter then it was ok but checked new filter and seemed ok. I put finger over pump inlet and felt very little or no suction. Not sure what to look for if I take pump apart. No pumps available in UK. Thanks Marty

This is a bad sign; I'd expect SU Burlen to be back in business--and filling backlogs--by now.

Rapid clicking still sounds like intake air leak; plugged fuel filter wouldn't necessarily cause it. Our BN2 had erratic fuel pump--drove us nuts for weeks. My dad finally discovered a pinhole leak at the (used) tank's pickup--$400 wasted--that Dad figured was caused by the flux used to solder the pipe in corroding the metal. Try disconnecting the pump at the inlet and plugging the hole*; if pumping stops that would confirm intake (but don't do this for very long as the solenoid/pump body could overheat).

* After needing them for years, I finally broke down and bought a bunch of rubber stoppers of various sizes from Amazon. It's amazing how often they come in handy.

Bob and John I thank you both a million times. You saved me 400 bucks on new Moss fuel pump. Air leak was at connection above rear tire. Best it has ever been!!! Thanks again Marty
