In response to Windsor's request, pictures of the fascia capping (the aluminium capping above the dash).

Windsor asked for a photo of the fascia capping I made. Below are some photos of the process I followed. The 1.5mm aluminium used was excess to requirements from some fascia on the house we built.

Started by bending some water pipe to the profile of the edge of the dash top.

Added pieces to maintain the correct angle of the pipe relative to the top of the cowl. Roughed out a pattern on the aluminium sheet to approximate the capping.

Clamped down and bending sheet. Metal was mostly eased up around the profile for the main length and then worked with the hammer around the ends to bring it into shape

Once the inside was started to be folded down, a fair bit of hammer work was need to stretch the metal on the inside curve.

Trimmed the ends where it meets the doors. When fitted to the dash it was obvious that I had not allowed enough metal at the ends to reach where the tenax studs hold it onto the cowl.

Added some sheet metal to both the inner and outer sides. My first attempt at tig welding aluminium sheet. Not too glamerous but it dressed up OK.

A little more dolly work and trimming the edges and it fits well. Especially happy since it will eventually be covered in vinyl.

Hi Lionel, Impressive for a first attempt at tig welding aluminum. Cleaning the aluminum of its oxide coating is key as well as cleaning you tig wire. Great job, looks great. Thank you for the pictures, love seeing your work. Frank

Hi Lionel , here are pictures of the bottom of my original capping. maybe this will help. The slots are 35mm X 18mm and slanted at roughly 40 degrees. Frank

Had no idea that's how they were drilled. I assumed there were just round holes for each screw for the hand rail. This forum is great for those situations such as this where you do not have a sample to work from. Thanks for the info Frank.

Hi Lionel , I did not know what the slots were for but I took it out to the car and found the spire nuts under the edge of the scuttle where the capping fits. It appears that the spire nuts are for the grab bar that attaches to the scuttle for right or left hand drive cars. There seems to be two types of capping depending on commission numbers. This link may help.

Thanks for the link Frank. I had not noticed it before. Good also because it gives several more photos of both inside and outside of the capping. Looks to me like I got it right. Still have to locate the slots and cut them in. Not a straight forward piece to fabricate because it curves in so many ways.
