BJ8 transmission 3rd gear chipping

I bought DW’s 3rd/4th gear selector hub. I couldn’t transfer the locking pins, DW holes were not big enough. I contacted them about it and they responded:

Thank you for your email sir. I have been speaking to our technical manager over this and I’ve been informed that the selector pins from the old hub should fit the new hub. Many require a small amount of fettling, however we would strongly recommend you do NOT fit these pins in 1st,2nd 3rd and 4th hubs. Not everything in life evolves for the better, the early gearboxes worked perfectly fine without them. The addition of these pins is an over complication and causes selection problems, we have left these out for over 20 years with no detriment.

So I installed the DW 3/4 hub assembly (no pins), gears are loud, drain oil, see metal chips. On the bench I find 18 chips on the left edge of 3rd gear, from a 10 minute ride. (It didn’t have any damage previously) It seems when the hub slides the right, it over extends and hits the edge of the teeth, then springs back to the place it should be. I have new selector shaft springs, ball bearings, new DW selector shafts. Did the gear chip because it doesn’t have the locking pins? Why did this happen?

The clutch housing has a buffer pad. That address the shaft going too far forward. The OD does have an area like the clutch housing for travel of the selector shafts. Should that also have a buffer pad?

Here’s photos of the 3rd gear damage. Do I need to replace 3rd gear or can I still use it? I will be going back to my 3rd hub with the locking pins.
