Has anyone figured out how to unlock the nut on the adjustable steering column? Mine is frozen and I can't free it with force. I'm afraid it will break. Any suggestions?

Probably best to leave the nut alone unless loosening has to be done. Moreover, I have never owned an adjustable steering wheel. If I had to try, I would use WD40 because I like the way it dissolves glue, general crud, and road tar. I would let it soak for a day and then hit the area again with the WD40 to hopefully reactivate anything that dried. To hold the nut I would probably use one of those plumber cloth wrap around wrenches. If the nut moves just a fuzz, then stop, and work the nut back and forth just that fuzz until things unfreeze. Good luck it sounds like a difficult one.

Here is a picture of the adjustable locking mechanism. It works a lot like a collet on a router. As you tighten the locking nut to squeezes the collet on the splined steering column. The threads are regular right hand threads. Definitely will need to take your time and soak it with your favorite penetrating lubricant as Steve suggested. You want to apply the penetrant at the back of the lock nut where it meets the steering wheel with the steering column pointing down. that way gravity will help the penetrant. Good luck Frank

Reminds me of when I was young and poor 50+ years ago... I had the same problem on my 58 TR3 so I drove to Sears, bought a chain wrench and used it in the parking lot to bust it loose.

Then, of course, I returned the wrench for a refund.

Thank you Sears for helping a young and needy driver.

I gather the adjustable steering wheel gets it close or closer to you.

David

Yes, the adjustment allows you to set the wheel at any distance from 'too close' all the way to ' much too close'.
