TR2/3/3A TR3 eBay: What do you Think

Shoot, they're all interesting. I like the creative replacement for the 'T' in TRIUMPH.

Looks like a nice solid driver -- the sort you used to be able to pick up for short money and enjoy the heck out of. Probably going to look like a restoration candidate to someone.

Here's something bizarre. I used to live In Spartanburg and the car guy is the guy that bought my house (and built that garage.) If you look over the 1st photo, you can see the contemporary house in the background. Well, I think it's cools anyway - we moved from there in 95. I had no idea until I looked at the TR3.

Pretty neat coincidence. I guess if we like each others cars, we like each others houses too!

I fear you are right about that. Someone should buy it, do anything that NEEDS to be done, and then enjoy it for another 100k miles or so. More likely, someone will buy it, do a half-baked "restoration" in a more resale-oriented red or green (with the obligatory tan interior) and resell it at such a high price that the buyer will feel obligated to bring it out one day a year to collect a cheap trophy, etc., etc. ... :(

If there were money in restoring cars, I'd be rich. I'm not. I always feel lucky if I can recover the parts...never mind the thousands of hours of work.

I agree Andy. Untouched drivers that still have some life and un-rusted steel left are almost extinct (I passed a half decent one a couple of years ago because I wasn't willing to cough up 5 grand). If it's the restorers who are driving up the price, it will be interesting to see how high it goes.

Reserve hasn't been met yet, so the seller thinks its worth a pretty good price too. Our local club president found a similar survivor a few years ago (at a much better price than ebay!) and has in fact enjoyed the heck out of it so far without getting into the restoration spiral. He put 4000+ miles on it in fact earlier this summer and it ran like a charm. As he has said - its only original once. I wish TRA or VTR would try to promote survivor cars, even if they are daily drivers, I think they have an appeal all their own.

I know I sure love and enjoy mine.

I do to. I'd gladly drive that car. My 4A is more a 50 year old used car that gets driven most days than a restored classic.

I wonder if there is a horn on the driver's side ? The one on the right is missing. Maybe in the trunk ?

Howdy Folks,

Out of Curiousity & less than 1hr away from me; I went to look at the TR3 yesterday.

Here`s my estimation of the cond:

Body panels show no bondo (I ran a ref. magnet over all the usual places):

Paint is quite poor with the Inside of the Boot lid spray bombed "Glacier White": She appears to be something like "Olde English White":

Interior needs to be completely redone to include carpet: There`s a "Cigarette Lighter" where an Overdrive switch would be:

Engine Bay really needs some serious cleaning:

I took her for a quick spin (2mi) & ran out reasonably well. Temp approx. 190 / Oil Pressure approx. 60lbs: I did not take her out on the Interstate:

There`s a toggle switch under dash to "Turn on & off" the Elec. feul pump. With the switch "Off"; She run for approx. 1mi. & then quit. Seller says its a means of detering theft! Thats true but she won`t run without the pump "Turned On" all the time:

For a car that supposedly has "35K Orig mi"; It sure needs alot of work!! "No car"; In my opinion; Can get to look so worn over "35K mi":

There is no boot cover, no tonneau & no side curtains; There is a top. No tools or hand crank:

The person who is the "High Bidder" on ebay is bidding like the car is in "Concours" cond!! It went from opening bid to $9.5K in "One Day". That person has "0" feedback which really does`nt mean anything.

Seller (John) says the "Reserve" is set @ $13K.

"John"; If your reading this; Its simply my opinion & observation of your car:

Thats it. Enough out of me.

Regards, Russ

Hi Russ!

Did you notice the "bracket" over the headlamp foot dimmer switch? Any idea what that is?

I'll be interested to see what this sells for. Comparing this car to my own 1959, especially under the hood, it's "interesting".

Tom

Hi Tom,

Yes, I did notice that but that did'nt get my attn. vs. the rest of the car so; I don't know what that's all about.

Regards, Russ

There was one other thing I did'nt notice in the pics.

On the passenger side "Cowl"; there's a large 2" - 3" washer. There's a 3/4" or larger hole there to accomodate a radio antenna.

i know there would be one in the "Fender" if the car came with a radio but I'm not 100% sure about the "Cowl". I don't think so.

Russ-

Actually the car I'm putting back on the road has an antenna hole on the passenger side cowl - not sure if that was per the factory recommendation, or just a common place back in the day.

"Interesting"!

The current high bidder banged it up to $9.5K in the 1st. day (10 day Auction).

There has`nt been a bid since then & now 7+ days to go.

If my memory serves me correctly; When I spoke to the seller Initially; He said the reserve was set at $10K (I may have been mistaken but ??). When I went to look at the car; The seller said its set at $13K?!?!

Anyways; Since the "Brakes" have been put on at $9.5K; We`ll see what happens!!

Just some passing thoughts.

Russ
