Went to the Wichita Mts. today to try out the camera on my new phone and got a pretty decent picture of this guy. He made me work for though, he kept turning away from me and I had to wait about seven minutes for him to turn.

Nice shot Walter! (y) A lot of folks out there don't realize just how nasty they can get at times.

Every year there are a few tourists that decide that buffalo probably aren't that dangerous and it never works out well for them.

I understand they can be quite mean. Nice photo Walter. The cameras in these new phones are really amazing.

Lovely picture but I still think this thread is a load of bull! (I'll get my coat) :D

Difference Between Bison and Buffalo

Bison ‘“ have a natural habitat that covers the majority of the United States, northern Mexico, and southern Canada. In addition to the iconic Plains Bison, there were also abundant Wood Bison; both were hunted to near extinction by the first white settlers. There are also bison native to Europe.

Buffalo ‘“ there are two main species of buffalo: the Domesticated Asian Water Buffalo and the Cape buffalo. The water buffalo has a range that extends across Asia.

My kids are 35 and 30 - and if your kids are in that range and were in Sunday School when they were little, you will recognize this song:

Nice photograph!

Being from the midwest / northeast, I can't remember the last time I saw a buffalo - er, bison.

Bas, I was that close, about 15 yards, and fairly safe in my Jeep. Buffalo don't tend to charge cars, at least I've not heard of one doing so before.

Hamish, Paul has the long and the sort of it. What I photographed is an American Bison. They've been colloquially called buffalo since the 1630s and most of us American Indians have called them that since our peoples started speaking English.

Tatanka is the Lakota word for bison bull. I am Quapaw and Kiowa, in Quapaw bison bullis "te to-ka." A cow is "temi," and a calf is "te zhi-kaw." The root for bison is "te."

My neighbor has Buffalo. He had one that he bottle fed that would come up to the fence. You could really see how HUGE they are. And they smell! A dog ran into their pasture that that was a mistake. This buffalo took off after the dog and would have caught it but the dog went under the fence just in time. It is hard to believe that something that big can run so fast!

They say that a buffalo can hit a top speed of a little over 30 mph.

We saw some at the National Bison Range in Moiese,Montana,
between Missoula & Kalispell. It was in the movie "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot".
Just a little North of there,we stopped and ate at a restaurant that
sold Bison burgers.

Where my buffalo photo was taken is at the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge just outside of Lawton in SW Oklahoma. Buffalo meat is not difficult to come by here in Oklahoma, there are several private herds, including ones owned by the Comanche, the Cheyenne and Arapaho, etc.
