Not sure why but:

Excellent, excellent :arms:

Goodman was good. But Shaw was S M O O O T H.

I actually think that Doc's clip of Artie Shaw doing Begin the Beguine is a recording of Benny someone played over the video of Artie. Artie's tone sounded more like this:

Okay, here we go. After some digging I found this video. This is the right recording of the song. Artie was a fantastic clarinetist and deserves to have the right audio of his recording. Shame on whomever uploaded a video of Artie playing with Benny dubbed over him.

While driving into this particular rabbit hole I found this video.

Believe me or don't but the next cut on the recording Walt just posted, "The Old Stamping Ground" on the collection we had (have) came into my head immediately after Shaw's last riff. Used to TRY to emulate him. Never came close.

I went back and paid attention. You're right, Walt.

Of course you're another clarinet player. Now I know why you're a man of such refined tastes.

Doc, do you ever play nowadays?

This is my current clarinet, an early 50s Selmer Centered Tone. I picked it up a couple of years ago and started playing around with it. Boy, it's hard. I was good once upon a time, like all state good, but that was another lifetime.

I never progressed beyond a Leblanc, still have the original silver one my mom thought was a good idea...

Pulled the Leblanc out a year ago, it needs new pads. And a way to apply the same rule as getting back on a bicycle!

"SQUEEEALLLL!!"

I used to semi-keep up with Acker Bilk. Not a hope in Hades now!

I played clarinet for a while in junior high. I would not know which end is up these days.
