Windscreen/windshield rubber

Nearing reinstall of windscreen (waiting on dash parts)
and heeding advice from the forum, paranoid about
installing windscreen with rubber gasket at the base of
the windscreen frame.

Old rubber seems a bit wider to fit well along the bottom
edge of the windscreen. Replacement part seems
narrower than the old. Looks as if what needs be done is
to lift the front outter edge of the rubber (edge closest to the opening edge of the bonnett) with a wide plastic
putty knife. This looks as if it will flare that edge
and could be okay once the windshield is tightened down.

Could it be that I received the wrong bottom gasket, like
an earlier year TR6? Mine is a 1974.

Plan on seeing a pro to install; but if I provide the
wrong part and she leaks, I'll pay in both time; labor;
materials and the agony of being so close to driving, yet
so far away.

I like to listen first, then jump (took years to get there.)

It has been my experience that you do have to pull the leading edge of the seal out as you tighten down the windscreen. The leading edge of the seal wants to curl under and does so to maintain a very positive seal against the body when the windscreen is fully home. I've used dental picks, plastic putty knifes, bicycle tube tools etc...

My method was to make a few turns on the side posts and the the three bolts at the base of the windscreen. Then pull the edge out. Make a few turns on all five fasteners again, pull the edge out. Repeat until the windscreen is home. It's really not as tedious as it sounds.

Sound like you have the right part to me. The windscreens didn't change so the year shouldn't effect the windscreen to body seal.

Thanks for the response. I will do as you suggest,
working the thing down. Want to get the windscreen frame
down in place, if I can, then see the pro to install the
glass.

Thanks again.

One more thing: What type of silicone or sealer should
be placed between the rubber at the bottom of the windscreen and the car body? Any help there?

None. At least in my experience. The seal should be all you need. The sealer could save you if the seal goes bad but would make it harder to take the windscreen off to replace the seal. The windscreen frame can be tough enough to get off already. Don't make it harder for the next time.

Yahoo! Windscreen is in. Still detail/painting the
three bolts on the dash pad near the windshield.
The one in the middle went in one time to place the
screen frame. I removed it for detail and doesn't want to
catch a thread to go back.

Hope I didn't strip or damage threads. Took me a while
to deal with the Whitworth threads on my speedo, but got
those and the dash is now about ready to reinstall.

Slowly, but surely moving forward.
