Sprite Shift Lever

I have a Rib-Cage trans. I believe the shop that installed it used my old Smooth-Case shift lever. I have been told , the Rib-Cage and Smoot-Case shift levers are not the same. Any opinions on this?

Paul,
From what I understand the smooth case and rib case shift levers are not interchangeable.

The smoothcase shifter is shorter (at the bottom end) than the ribcase one. The smoothcase shifter will fit in the ribcase but the shifting will be extremely sloppy, the ribcase shifter won't fit in the smoothcase.

Okay... then you’ve just explained my problem. They must have put the smooth-case shifter in the new (re-built) rib -cage from Quantum. It is sloppy. Where’s a good place to get the proper shift lever?

Paul,
That shift lever is from a later Midget and will work fine, but it will have the anti vibration cylinder in it.

Paul,

Here is a side-by-side for you. The short one is the smooth case.

Great photo! Thanks. It looks as if the one I posted is a smooth case, yet he says it came out of a 1964 Midget.

Looks like the longer version to me. What does it measure from the bottom of the ball to the end? I'll compare to one of mine.

Just was browsing the site and came across this thread and decided to make sure I has the correct shift lever installed.
Thanks for the pictures
I have about 5-6 levers collected over the years and it appears that a smooth case lever found its way into my ribcase box when I built it
I was wondering why is felt a little loose, even after replacing the O ring and cup assy.
The correct lever is not installed and it feel like it should
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the thread

See problem solved. I love this Forum! And as soon as my new Shift Lever is available from Gerard, a fellow lister is going to get my spare 210 Shifter and that will resolve a problem for him.

I want to thank BillM here for sending me a rib-case shift handle. I had been using and short smooth case shifter in a rib-case. Boy! what a difference now. The proper one is much tighter and without the noise. A few months back, I changed my trans oil. It holds right at 40oz. I used 10oz of Lucas oil treatment and 30oz of 20/50 Castrol. After about 500 miles, the trans seems to have a lot less noise.

I’ve had the correct rib-case shift handle, that BillM sent me, for a week now. a world of difference! Especially how well it goes in reverse. Any of you that have replaced the old smooth-case with the newer Trans, make sure you have the longer shift handle installed. The old shorter one will work, but not as well. Thanks again Bill!
