Old military vehicle [in India?], what is it?

This image came across Flickr, some sort of military vehicle, anyone have any clues? Perhaps in India?

It's a Rolls Royce! They were specially-commissioned armoured cars for use primarily in the Middle East during WW1. T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) had one.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was the only one that looked exactly like it. They were probably all built to order. I guess you could say this was the forerunner of the APC.

Yeah those are cool. I saw a picture of T.E. Lawrence next to his years ago, always thought it was really cool, that Rolls managed to keep the hood shape essentially the same as their production cars.

These things were not mass-produced, so there were probably quite a few varieties......some cars were also converted from passenger vehicles, so who knows how many versions there were? There were some that were used by the Desert Rats in WW2 as well, although not in any significant numbers. I found a few images of them on Google, but none that matched exactly. Interesting photograph that you found.

In case anyone is interested... Did some checking around, made a post on the Great War forum, and found out that this truck seems to be a 1920's Crossley armoured car!

Classic and Sports Car's Feb. '05 issue has a story and test of a Rolls armoured car. I know a little bit about how those early Rollers were built (for road use), and it made fascinating reading to see what was upgraded for combat use.
Those things weigh a ridiculous amount, too!

I went through one of the websites above and it looks like there are a whole bunch of different armoured cars built by a variety of different car/truck companies between the wars, there were more companies than just Crossley and Rolls-Royce

I know that Humber made armoured cars, but thought that was just in WW2

In the Great Britain section, I love the Armoured Quadricycle being driven by FR Simms (presumably the FR Simms of Daimler fame). I wouldn't be going into battle on that thing for quids! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This type of armoured car seems to have been operating with the British Army as late as the Second World War. tha Armoured Car Section, Rangoon Battalion, BAF seems to have had cars very much like this one on December 6, 1941.
